Whether you’re coming in as a fan of Lego or you’re coming in as a fan of the toys-to-life genre, I definitely think that Lego Dimensions has something you’ll enjoy.
Lego Dimensions is another entry into the hugely popular toys-to-life genre that was pioneered by Skylanders back in 2011. Since then the Skylanders franchise has continued to grow rapidly, Disney has joined in with Disney Infinity, and Nintendo has come out with their amiibo line. Each company has tried to put a new spin on the toys and they have all had success to varying degrees.
While some say that Lego should have entered the game many years ago, I think their timing is just about perfect. They’ve been biding their time and watching the competition so that they can learn from their mistakes. Now Lego is ready to #BreakTheRules.
Sticking to their Roots
As you well know, Lego is a well-established toy company and their Lego sets are enjoyed by kids and adults worldwide.
Well, for all the Lego collectors out there, you’ll be please to hear that each and every Lego Dimensions item will be a part of a unique Lego set complete with its own set number. Everything from the Starter Packs to the Level Packs to the Team Packs and the Fun Packs will each have their own set number, piece count, and the ability to use the bricks outside of the game (if that’s something you want to do).
While Activision, Disney, and Nintendo all had to dream up new designs for their toys-to-life figures, Lego will continue to produce the same bricks and minifigs as always.
Starter Pack
If you want to play Lego Dimensions, you will need to purchase a Starter Pack. This pack will include:

- 1 Lego Dimensions Game
- 1 Lego Toy Pad
- (Bricks to Build) 1 Lego Gateway
- 1 Batman Minifigure
- 1 Gandalf Minifigure
- 1 Wyldstyle Minifigure
- 1 Lego Batmobile Vehicle
This Starter Pack will be available for all current major consoles including:
Lego Dimensions is set to release on September 27, 2015. Pre-orders are currently available on Amazon as well as most other major retailers.
Fun Packs
The Fun Packs will be the cheapest option to expand your fun in Lego Dimensions. Each Fun Pack will include 1 minifigure and the pieces to build 1 vehicle or gadget.
These Fun Packs will include characters from Lego worlds we already know as well as some newcomers. The current roster includes characters from:
- DC Comics
- The Lord of the Rings
- The LEGO Movie
- LEGO Ninjago
- The Wizard of Oz
While this list already provides a vast array of characters, Lego has promised to include more franchises along the way.
Team Packs
The Team Packs are pretty much just what they sound like. Each Team Pack will include:
- 2 Minifigures
- 2 Vehicles or Gadgets
All the characters and items in these packs will be from the same franchise.
Level Packs
The Level Packs are the most expensive addition to the game, but they may just be the best value as well. Each Level Pack will include:
- 1 Minifigure
- 1 Vehicle
- 1 Gadget
- 1 New Level (unlocked in the game)
While you receive one less minifigure than the Team Pack, you unlock more in-game content.
Only one Level Pack is currently slated to release at launch, but more will come over time.
